I have a confession. I do NOT like Dr. Seuss books. Yes, I know I’m probably the only person who feels that way. But I don’t! I could have easily remained quiet on this subject, and you would have never known… so why confess now?
Big M recently declared that Dr. Seuss is his FAVORITE author. He’s decided to read every Dr. Seuss book he can find. I admit that while his hands filled with The Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish and Hop on Pop, I cringed inside a bit. I did NOT; however, try to pull him out of the Seuss section of the library.
While I’m sure I stand alone in my avoidance of anything Seuss-like, I know I’m not the only person who dislikes their kid’s reading choices. And that is the reason for the confession.
Big M is reading! He’s excited about reading! He has an opinion about what he reads! I couldn’t be happier. So, to support his newest venture and to keep him reading, I threw on The Cat in the Hat Hat, planned an activity perfect for celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday, and headed to school with both of my Dr. Seuss lovers.
Dr. Seuss Activity –There’s a Wocket in my Pocket
It was so much fun reading There’s a Wocket in My Pocket! By Dr. Seuss to the kindergarten and first-grade classes at M and M’s school. Since I’m working on their school days I tend to donate my time in other ways, getting to be in there classroom was nice for all of us.
You know me, I had to get in a little playful learning while I was there! This activity was great for practicing fine motor skills and I even squeezed in a little creative art!
1. For the backing, I used half a sheet of white construction paper. I cut pockets out of scrapbook paper. (Any paper would work; just make sure it’s a different color than the backing paper). Punching the holes took a bit of trial and error. It took me way longer than I want to admit to get this right. 😉 Make sure the pocket is close enough to ALL three edges for the hole punch to reach. There have to be an even number of holes for the lacing to line up right.
2. At the starting hole, I taped the yarn to the back of the construction paper.
3. To make lacing easier for the kids, I covered the end of the yarn with tape.
4. Since I was doing this for a large group, I wanted them to be easy to start. I laced the first two holes. If I were doing this at home, I probably wouldn’t have done that.
Once the kids had all of their pocket’s laced up, it was time to make a Wocket. I gave each of them a pre-cut piece of paper. I learned a long time ago that if there is a certain size you want the art… only give them that much space to work with.
I love how different each Wocket turned out!
Big M’s teacher requested lines on the back of the first grader’s Wocket sheet. She asked them to write out their name and then create words that rhymed. What a fun idea!
