20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Discussion Questions & Activities
Asking questions and making predictions while you read is a great way to make sure your kids are understanding the story. Books also make for great conversation starters. There are a couple of different ways you can use these questions. Try pausing while your reading to ask questions or save the questions for over dinner. That way the kids are also thinking back on the story and remembering details.
Chapter 10 – Activity & Discussion Question
- In chapter 10 the Nautilus is exploring the Indian Ocean. Take out a map or search for one on the internet. Find your home and the Indian Ocean. How long would it take you to travel there? What types of transportation would you need?
- Captain Nemo gives the fisherman a bag of pearls. What gifts have you given lately? Can you think of a gift you could give now?
Chapter 11 – Activity & Discussion Question
- What do you think about Ned’s plans to leave the ship? What options do Ned and his friends have besides escaping?
- Build a submarine. Use pillows, blankets, cardboard and your imagination. Work together to try different methods of escape. What do you think would work best?
Chapter 12 – Activity & Discussion Question
- Mr. Aronnax watches the gobies in chapter 12. I was curious and searched to see what gobies were. I found this great post featuring several types of gobies. Each so unique and brightly colored. Visit the page or do your own search. Then spend some time drawing these beautiful little fish. Color them in with water colors or colored pencils.
- On page 79 the ship becomes very hot. Before reading on to page 80, talk about what might have caused an increase in the heat. After you read the reason for it, talk about how your answers were different or similar to what actually happened.
