9 Not Too Scary Halloween Books for Kids

One of my favorite ways to celebrate a holiday is by filling our home library with special kid books. Halloween is no exception. Of course we have favorites that come out year after year, but I’m also always on the look out for new Halloween books for kids.

That’s why I was so excited to find a HUGE selection of Halloween books on the Epic! reading app. We’ve been using Epic! for the past few months and I love it for so many reasons.

Halloween Picture Books

Lula’s Brew by Elizabeth O. Dulemba. What a lovely story about 4 witches. When little Lula’s dreams don’t exactly match the wishes of her 3 Aunties she finds a way to make her own personality shine while honoring her family. The story is fun and the pictures are beautiful.

Little Halloween by Denise Brennan-Nelson. Little Halloween is a sweet book full of rhymes and riddles perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. This is one that you could easily read again and again.

A Teeny Tiny Halloween by Lauren L. Wohl. We really enjoyed A Teeny Tiny Halloween. When the teeny tiny woman finds her house buried under a pile of fall leaves, she must figure out a creative solution for getting out. Her idea is both yummy and successful!

Halloween Chapter Books

The Boxcar Children Halloween Special (The Boxcar Children Mysteries)Gertrude Chandler Warner. It’s so fun to share a series with M and M that I loved when I was a kid. This book has three Boxcar Children stories; The Mystery of the Singing Ghost, The Mystery of the Mummy’s Curse and The Mystery at Skeleton Point.

Scream Street: Fang of the Vampire by Tommy Donbavand. Scream Street is a little scary and funny, with an adventure weaved in. There are also pictures sprinkled in… which is a big draw for my kids.

The Little Vampire by Angela Sommer-Bodenburg. While rounding up Halloween books for M and M, I read the Amazon reviews. The reviews on The Little Vampire are so fun! I had never heard of this book, but it seems to have been a childhood favorite among many. This is on our read aloud list for sure!

Halloween Craft Books

Halloween Crafts by Jean Eick. I was not surprised that this book caught Little M’s attention, or that it inspired hours of crafting! Halloween Crafts is full of simple crafts that use materials we have on hand. There’s a Pumpkin Cutout Craft, directions for making masks out of paper plates and tips for making Halloween cards.

Carving Pumpkins by Dana Meachen Rau. Carving pumpkins is a great book for getting ready for making Jack O’ Lanterns. There is are sections on picking the perfect pumpkin, the history of the Jack O’ Lantern tradition and basic tools you’ll need for carving. I especially like that she includes tips for making a plan and giving your pumpkin personality.

Gruesome Grub Halloween Party Recipes by Kim Mitzo Thompsona and Karen Mitzo Hilderbrand. Gruesome Grub is full of really fun recipe ideas. Anybody want to try some Slime Juice? How about Boogers on a Stick? The Bone Bread Recipe is so simple I think it will make a wonderful after school snack! The kids can make it and then eat it.
